What is a special needs adoption?

A special needs adoption is when an adoptive family chooses to take responsibility for a child who has an emotional, mental, or physical disability or other special condition. This type of adoption is regulated by various state laws, including those in Delaware, and is often facilitated by adoption agencies that specialize in finding homes for children with special needs. In Delaware, children eligible for special needs adoption can be placed for adoption either through a private agency, the Division of Family Services, or the Delaware Adoption Exchange. All special needs adoptions are managed by the court system, which must determine that the adoption is in the best interest of the child. This includes not only the adoptive family meeting the legal requirements for adoption, but also showing that the home environment is suitable for the child. Special needs adoptions may require specific services before and after placement, such as medical care, therapy, or special tutoring. Once the adoption is finalized, the adoptive family may receive financial assistance from the state known as a subsidy or adoption assistance. This assistance can be used to help cover the cost of any additional support services that the child requires. By providing loving homes to these children in need, special needs adoptions give these children a chance to grow and thrive in an accepting and supportive family.
