What is a special needs adoption?
A special needs adoption occurs when a child is adopted who has been identified as having particular needs that make them harder to place than other children. In the state of Florida, when adopting through the child welfare system, children who have been identified as having a special need or disability are referred to as “special needs children” or “children with special needs.” These children can have any type of need from physical to intellectual to emotional. In Florida, adopting a special needs child requires an adoptive parent who is interested in the child’s unique needs and is willing to provide the child with the necessary support. The adoptive parent must have the resources, skill sets, and financial ability to be able to adequately meet the needs of the child. This includes providing the child with necessary medical, educational, and emotional support, and often may require the parent to provide a more structured and nurturing environment than that of a traditional family. When adopting a special needs child in the state of Florida, it can often be helpful to be a part of the adoption network that provides support to those considering or going through the adoption process. In addition, advocates and attorneys specializing in adoption and foster care law can help families understand the complexities of the law, and provide information about their rights and responsibilities as an adoptive parent.
