What is an independent adoption?
An independent adoption is a type of adoption legally conducted without the involvement of an adoption agency in Nebraska. It is typically handled by attorneys and other legal representatives. In this type of adoption, a birthmother may choose to place her baby for adoption without the help of a state agency. She may contact attorneys, adoption facilitators, or adoption attorneys to assist with the process. The birthmother will typically enter into a contract with the adoptive family or individual and establish the terms of the adoption. The court will then proceed with the legal aspects of the adoption. Typically, the birth family will have no contact with the adoptive family during the adoption process or afterwards. An independent adoption can be either an open or closed adoption, depending on the wishes of the birth and adoptive families. The parties involved must follow state and federal laws regarding the adoption process. An independent adoption is often viewed as an alternative to traditional agency adoptions, and can be a faster and less expensive option.
