What is the Interstate Compact on Adoption and Medical Assistance?

The Interstate Compact on Adoption and Medical Assistance (ICAMA) is an agreement among the states that governs interstate adoptions. In the United States, when an adoption involves another state, the compact applies to facilitate the relocation and provide care and financial assistance to those affected. In Florida, the ICAMA is established in Section 63.202 of the state statutes and administered by the Department of Children and Families. The ICAMA promotes the safe adoption of children and offers assistance to families for the cost of providing medical and/or educational services for a child adopted outside of his or her home state. The compact also ensures that the person responsible for making the adoption is qualified to do so and that the child is protected from abuse or exploitation. In order for an adoption to take place, all of the states involved must enter into the compact.
