Can I adopt a child and bring them to the US?
In Florida, you can adopt a child and bring them to the US but you must comply with federal immigration laws. According to the US Department of State, the US does allow adoptive parents to apply for an immigrant visa for their adopted child. Before you apply for the immigrant visa, you must obtain an approved adoption petition from US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This petition must document that the adoption was conducted in compliance with the laws of Florida and the adopted child’s home country. In order to bring your adopted child into the US you must also provide evidence that you are financially responsible for the child and that the adoption is in the best interest of the child. Once the USCIS approves the petition, you will need to file an immigrant visa application at the US Embassy or Consulate in the child’s home country. Your adopted child must also be found eligible for immigration into the United States. This involves submitting a Form I-600 to USCIS before traveling to the US. Once the Form I-600 is approved, the adopted child can travel to the US with an IR-3 Visa. This is a special visa specifically for adopted children who are coming to the US to live with their adoptive parents. Once in the US, the adopted child will receive a US passport and permanent residence status.
