What is mediation?

Mediation is an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) method often used in Maryland to help resolve disputes between two or more parties. In mediation, a neutral third-party mediator helps the parties involved to understand each other’s points of view and work out an agreement or compromise that is acceptable to all sides. During mediation, the mediator will meet separately with each party to understand their positions and then work to bridge any gaps between them. Mediation generally takes less time and costs less than a court trial, and it allows the parties to come up with their own solution which is uniquely tailored to their specific situation. Furthermore, the process often allows for the parties involved to keep their disputes confidential and out of the public record. Additionally, the mediation process often helps the parties involved to better understand the other sides’ perspective and create a greater level of mutual respect which can help prevent future disputes.
