What are the requirements for obtaining a USDA organic certification?

In order to obtain a USDA Organic Certification in Indiana, farmers and producers must meet certain requirements set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The process begins with the farmer or producer filing an Organic System Plan with the National Organic Program (NOP) certifying agent assigned to their area. This plan should detail the steps taken to maintain organic production standards, including soil fertility, pest management and product labeling. Farmers and producers must allow an inspection of their land, buildings, equipment and records to be conducted by the NOP. During the inspection, the certifying agent will verify that all organic production and handling practices are correctly documented and in compliance with the NOP rules. They must also be able to demonstrate a complete record-keeping system for all organic products. Once the certifying agent has determined that the farmer or producer meets the requirements of organic production, the NOP will review the application and the certification will be granted. After certification, the farmer or producer must continue to document and demonstrate following organic production standards throughout the annual certification period. Violations of the requirements may lead to the removal of organic certification status.
