What is the National Organic Program (NOP)?
The National Organic Program (NOP) is a program within the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Its purpose is to regulate organic agriculture in the United States by setting and enforcing national standards for organic products. The NOP was established in 2002, and since then it has been overseen by the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). The standards set by the NOP are designed to protect the environment and the health of consumers by regulating how organic food is grown, handled, and processed. Organic agriculture requires that farmers use methods that promote soil and water conservation and minimize the use of synthetic materials. It also prohibits the use of most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. In Florida, any organic products that are labeled as “organic” must meet the NOP standards and be certified by an authorized certifying agent. All certifying agents must be accredited by the AMS. The standards and regulations of the NOP are updated regularly to keep up with advances in organic agriculture. The purpose of the NOP is to ensure that organic agriculture is done in a way that is safe for consumers and the environment. By adhering to the standards set by the NOP, farmers and other producers can ensure that their products meet the highest standards of safety and quality.
