What are the laws concerning the labeling and packaging of agricultural products?
In Florida, all agricultural products must adhere to the labeling and packaging regulations established by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Labels must accurately identify the product and include the name and address of the producer or packer, a job number and statement of the product’s grade, quality, size, or other characteristic, the net weight, the common name of the product, the country of origin, the net quantity of contents, and any other required information. Packaging must also meet standards laid out by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. All packages must be properly sealed, securely closed, and made of materials that protect the product from spoilage, contamination, and adulteration. Package labels must include the name and address of the manufacturer, the kind of product, the net quantity of the contents, a lot code, and other required information. Agricultural products must also be labeled to indicate whether they are organic or have been treated with pesticides, fungicides, growth hormones and antibiotics. Labeling must also indicate if the product has been irradiated. All labels must meet certain minimum standards and any violations can result in action by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
