What is the Farm Bill?
The Farm Bill is a comprehensive piece of legislation that sets out the rules for, and allocates the funds for, agricultural and agricultural-related activities in the United States. In Delaware, the Farm Bill provides food assistance programs, loans, and research grants to help Delaware farmers succeed and improve the quality and safety of their products. Additionally, the Farm Bill allocates funding and sets policy for key conservation, nutrition, and rural development programs in the state, such as the Conservation Reserve Program and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The Farm Bill is also important in Delaware because it provides funding for vital agricultural research to help farmers increase their yields and profits. Finally, the Farm Bill helps Delaware’s farmers be more competitive in the global marketplace by providing financial assistance and loan guarantees. The Farm Bill is reauthorized or revised by Congress every five years. It is a significant piece of legislation and it has a far-reaching impact on all aspects of US agriculture, including Delaware. Without the Farm Bill, Delaware farming would be far less successful, and the state would miss out on the food aid, research grants, and loan guarantees that help make farming more viable and financially sustainable.
