What are the regulations governing the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)?

In New Hampshire, the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the agricultural industry is heavily regulated. All GMOs must be approved by the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food, which enforces the labeling and regulation of all GMOs. The Department requires labeling for all food products containing any genetically modified ingredient. All food products must have a label stating that it contains “genetically engineered ingredients” or a phrase to that effect. This applies to both raw agricultural commodities (such as grains) and processed foods (such as packaged snacks). The state also has regulations that dictate how GMO crops must be grown. All GMO crops must be isolated from any traditional crops and must be kept separate during planting, harvesting, packing, processing, storing, and transporting. The use of pesticides and herbicides on GMO crops is also regulated. The Department of Agriculture requires that any herbicide or pesticide used on a GMO crop must be approved by the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Moreover, the Department of Agriculture recommends that only the least toxic and most effective pesticides and herbicides be used. Finally, the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture regularly tests all GMOs for safety and efficacy. The Department inspects and tests all crops to ensure that they meet the safety and quality standards of the state. If any crop fails to meet the standards, the Department of Agriculture can revoke its approval. By following these regulations, New Hampshire ensures a safe and healthy food supply for its citizens.
