What are the animal disease control laws?

In Arizona, the animal disease control laws are set by the state’s Department of Agriculture. Outlined in the Arizona Administrative Code, these laws establish regulations to ensure the health and safety of animals and people from diseases that are transmissible among animals. To prevent the spread of animal diseases, the state requires that all livestock animals have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) before they are moved within, imported into, or exported from Arizona. The CVI certifies that the animals are free of communicable diseases and are in fit condition to travel. Additionally, the state has a mandatory premise identification program which requires all livestock owners to register their premises with the state and display the farm’s registration number on each animal. These steps help to track the origin and movement of livestock and to improve the response to outbreaks of diseases. The Arizona Department of Agriculture also works to control animal diseases through monitoring, surveillance, and disease testing. If a disease is suspected, the Department may issue a quarantine and testing protocol. This protocol requires all animals within the quarantined area to be tested and those that test positive must be euthanized. Through these steps, the state of Arizona is able to identify and contain diseases to prevent their spread throughout the state.
