What is the role of the FDA in regulating food safety?
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a critical role in regulating food safety for all Americans, including those living in Texas. The FDA is responsible for inspecting food production facilities, vendor stands, food storage areas, and other places where food is produced, processed, or stored. The FDA also sets safety standards such as acceptable levels of contaminants and additives, as well as labeling requirements. The FDA also has the authority to investigate foodborne illnesses and outbreaks and to recall unsafe or contaminated products from the market. In Texas, the FDA oversees the state’s agriculture law, which is administered by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). Under this law, the TDA is responsible for enforcing and implementing safety and food protection regulations put forward by the FDA, including such topics as food safety inspections, recall procedures, and food protection programs. Furthermore, TDA inspectors, working under the direction of the FDA, conduct on-site inspections and investigations, as well as laboratory analysis. By regulating food safety, the FDA acts as a “watchdog” organization, protecting the public from potential risks and hazards associated with contaminated food. As such, it has an essential role in protecting the health of Texans who purchase and consume food products.
