What are the laws governing the transport of agricultural commodities?

In Virginia, agricultural commodities are subject to a variety of laws governing how they can be transported. According to Virginia Code Section 3.2-4500, agricultural commodities are defined as "any unprocessed form of plant or animal life or life-producing material, except timber, intended or used for agricultural or horticultural purposes, and any product of such plant or animal life." In addition, Virginia law dictates that all agricultural commodities being transported into the state must originate from a certified farm or a Virginia-approved grading or packing house. Virginia Law also specifies restrictions for the transportation of certain types of agricultural commodities. Notably, no person shall transport ungraded or unpacked nursery stock through the state of Virginia. Additionally, when transporting agricultural livestock or poultry, a person must have a certificate of veterinary inspection. This certificate attests to the health of the animals and is required before the animals can be transported to Virginia. If agricultural commodities are intended for sale, Virginia Law stipulates that they must be properly packaged, labeled, and graded. If the commodities are damaged, the transporter is required to reduce the price of the product according to the degree of damage. Virginia Law also prohibits any person from transporting agricultural commodities across the state border, except in the case of vehicles containing strawberries. In Virginia, laws governing the transportation of agricultural commodities are in place to ensure the safe and efficient movement of these important resources. By following these laws, transporters can ensure that they are following all applicable regulations.
