What are the laws governing the use of genetically modified organisms?
In Arizona, the laws that govern the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are determined by the Department of Agriculture. Under the Arizona Agricultural Biotechnology Regulation Act, any person who engages in the sale, distribution, or use of agricultural biotechnological materials, including GMOs, must obtain a license from the Arizona Department of Agriculture. The department also has the authority to regulate the use of GMOs in the state. The department can impose restrictions on GMOs, including the type and quantity of genetically engineered material, and the locations where it may be used. They can also require that the labeling of any products containing GMOs must be done in a manner that clearly identifies the presence of genetically modified material. In addition, the department can require that a record of all sales and distribution of GMOs be kept for up to three years. This record must include all activities related to the use, sale, and distribution of GMOs, and can be used for research, regulatory, and statistical purposes. The Arizona Department of Agriculture also has the authority to impose fines on those who violate these regulations. The amount of the fines may range from $100 to $1000 per violation. These laws are designed to provide Arizona farmers and consumers with protection from the dangers associated with the use of GMOs.
