What is the Federal Meat Inspection Act and how does it apply to agriculture?
The Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA) is a food safety law that was established in 1906 to protect the public from harmful and contaminated food products. The act requires that all meat products sold to consumers be inspected by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The inspection process includes visual examination of the meat products, as well as the processing establishments and the slaughtering operations. The act also requires that labels on meat products must include the inspection mark of the USDA. In Delaware, all meat processors must abide by the provisions set forth in the FMIA. This includes all facilities that process, store, package, or transport any meat or poultry product. In order to comply with the Act, all meat processors must have a valid license from the Delaware Department of Agriculture and follow the inspection and labeling requirements set forth in the FMIA. A meat processing facility must also meet all sanitary requirements and maintain records of the products they produce and the procedures used. The FMIA is an important law that helps to protect the public’s health by keeping commercially sold meat products safe and wholesome, while also ensuring that Delaware’s agricultural producers are able to stay in business by following the regulations set forth in the Act.
