What are the laws governing the transport of livestock?
In Florida, there are laws governing the transport of livestock. These laws are in place to ensure that the animals are kept in a safe and humane environment while being transported. Livestock must always be transported in a clean, dry, well-ventilated, and secure trailer. The vehicle must have appropriate facilities for each animal in order to ensure their safety and welfare. All trailers carrying livestock must be maintained in a safe and clean condition. Animals being transported should never be overcrowded or too tightly confined. All animals must be unloaded and inspected for signs of ill health, injury, or discomfort every four hours. If any condition appears, the livestock must be unloaded and appropriately treated immediately. It is also the responsibility of the driver to keep detailed records documenting the number of animals, their destination, and the duration of the journey. Animals must also be provided with sufficient food and water, as well as rest stops as needed. All animals must have access to clean, fresh drinking water at all times and should have adequate shelter from inclement weather. If the temperature is either too cold or too hot, the animals should be given extra care. Drivers of livestock vehicles must have a valid livestock transport license and are subject to inspection by law enforcement officials to ensure compliance with the rules and regulations governing livestock transport. Those found to be in violation of these laws can face fines and removal of their license.
