What are the laws governing the transport of livestock?

In the state of Washington, the laws concerning livestock transportation are found in Title 16 RCW (Revised Code of Washington). Under this Title, it is illegal to transport any livestock in a manner that may cause suffering, harm, or death. All livestock must be provided with food, water, and space adequate to their size and breed. All vehicles used for transportation must be in good condition and maintained to ensure safe travel. When transporting livestock in Washington, you must obtain a certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) from an accredited veterinarian. The CVI must be provided to the driver of the vehicle and must be available for inspection at any time during the course of the trip. Also, all livestock must be protected from weather and the elements during transportation and all livestock carriers must be large enough so that the animals are not overcrowded. Additionally, Washington state laws dictate that no person may sell or otherwise transfer any animal which is diseased, crippled, or emaciated, and all livestock must be moved in an expeditious and humane manner. Any livestock transported in violation of these laws may be impounded and civil penalty and fines may be imposed. Moreover, any person who knowingly violates any provision of Washington’s livestock transportation laws may be guilty of a misdemeanor.
