Are there any restrictions on the use of growth hormones for dairy cows?
In Pennsylvania there are restrictions on the use of growth hormones for dairy cows. According to the Pennsylvania Code, it is illegal to use any synthetic growth hormone for dairy cows. The hormones that are approved for use are natural hormones that do not have the same adverse effects on environment and animal health. The only country in Pennsylvania where use of synthetic growth hormones is allowed is in the medical field and only with special permits. The permits are given for the use of anti-methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) vaccines, however, they are only applicable for calves in the care of a veterinarian. It is illegal to inject, orally administer, or otherwise give synthetic growth hormones to any dairy cow, and those caught doing so are subject to legal penalties. Furthermore, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has enacted the Livestock Health and Wellness Act. This act imposes the mandatory testing of cows for the presence of any growth hormones, and violators may be fined or have their license revoked. In addition, dairy farmers must adhere to specific regulations regarding the use of antibiotics, which may also affect the use of growth hormones. The use of antibiotics and growth hormones often results in increased milk production, but it can lead to health complications in cows if they are not used properly. Farmers must be sure to read and follow the instructions of the label of any product they are using. In short, there are very distinct restrictions in Pennsylvania on the use of growth hormones for dairy cows, and farmers must be sure to adhere to all regulations in order to stay complaint.
