What are the regulations governing the transport of farm animals?
In Washington, the transport of farm animals is subject to a series of regulations set forth by the State Department of Agriculture. The first regulation is that any animal being transported must be accompanied by a valid certificate of veterinary inspection from an approved veterinarian. This certificate must include basic information such as the species being transported, the age and sex of the animal(s) and any other pertinent information. Additionally, animals being transported must be accompanied by ample food, water and bedding for their journey as well as any necessary medications. Drivers transporting animals must also ensure that the vehicle used for transport is well-ventilated and not overcrowded, and that the temperature inside the vehicle does not exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Animals must also be located and stabilized in such a way that they remain in an upright position and not shifted from side to side. Drivers transporting farm animals must also be in compliance with all relevant federal, state and local laws, including sanitation and safety requirements, as well as any particular regulations established by the local jurisdiction. All drivers are responsible for the welfare of the animals transported and must ensure that the animals remain in a healthy, safe and humane condition throughout their journey.
