What are the laws regulating the use of animal antibiotics in animal agriculture?
In Arizona, animal antibiotics are regulated by the Arizona Department of Agriculture (ADA). According to the ADA, the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture must be done judiciously, with the supervision of a veterinarian and with the animal’s welfare as the top priority. Antibiotics used on animals must be labeled as such, and must be given to an animal only when it is deemed necessary to treat or prevent a disease. The veterinarian must provide the producer with a copy of the prescription, and the producer must keep complete records if antibiotics are used. Record keeping must include the date, type of antibiotic, amount given, species, and the duration of treatment. In some cases, a veterinarian may designate a qualified person to administer the antibiotics. If this is the case, the person administering the antibiotics must have an authorization form that is signed and dated by the veterinarian. The ADA also requires that antibiotics be given to food animals to control specific diseases only when insufficient alternative treatments are available or when a risk assessment has been conducted. The use of antibiotics as growth promotors is no longer allowed in Arizona. The ADA has set up a system for monitoring and inspecting the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture. The ADA can issue a warning or cease and desist order to producers who fail to comply with the regulations. The ADA can also impose a fine, suspend or revoke the license of a producer if the regulations are not followed.
