What are the laws governing animal welfare in agriculture?
In Indiana, animal welfare laws depend on the type of animal being treated. The state has adopted the national codes of humane slaughter as a guideline for operations and prohibits certain practices that are known to be harmful to animals. Other laws include: The Humane Care for Hooved Animals Act requires farmers to show appropriate care for their animals, including providing sufficient nutrition, sufficient shelter from extreme weather, and appropriate veterinary attention when necessary. The Indiana Horse Cruelty Statute makes it illegal to deliberately abuse or neglect horses. This includes intentionally exposing horses to dangerous conditions, including depriving them of food, water, or shelter. The Stallion Safety Statute requires those breeding stallions and mares to provide adequate nutrition, shelter, and veterinary care. It also prohibits the use of hormones or drugs to enhance breeding performance. The Livestock Confinement Statute requires commercial feeders to provide properly constructed and maintained pens, shelters, and other enclosures for hogs and calves. These enclosures must provide the animals with sufficient space to move around and get exercise. Agricultural law also contains provisions related to the humane treatment of all animals. This includes a ban on the use of animal-crushing devices, as well as the intentional killing of animals and the use of animals in experiments or exhibitions involving physical injury. Overall, Indiana has adopted a variety of laws to ensure that animals in agricultural settings are treated humanely. Farmers and other operators must understand their legal obligations in order to avoid penalties and potential criminal charges.
