What are the legal requirements for aircraft navigation and flight operations?
In Louisiana, aircraft navigation and flight operations must be done in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) regulations. The FAA requires aircraft to be airworthy and for all pilots to be properly certified. Pilots must have a valid medical certificate, maintain a minimum amount of flight experience based on the aircraft flown, and must complete a written exam for each rating held. Pilots must be aware and adhere to the rules of airspace, which include visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR). VFR requires flying with a minimum distance from clouds and a minimum visibility of three statute miles. IFR requires using navigational instruments to fly an aircraft and the use of ATC (air traffic control) services. Additionally, pilots must be aware of the area they are flying in and any special use airspace. The FAA requires all aircraft to be registered with the FAA and to have a current Airworthiness Certificate. Additionally, maintenance personnel must be FAA certified for the type of maintenance they are performing. Pilots must also file a flight plan when required and follow all other FAA regulations. Finally, if VFR flight is being used, a flight check should be done to make sure the aircraft is in good working order prior to takeoff. This includes checking the aircraft’s pressure integrity, fuel systems, flight controls, and navigation instruments. It is the pilot’s responsibility to make sure the aircraft is airworthy and has the ability to fly safely in accordance with FAA regulations.
