What are the legal requirements for pilot training and certification?
Pilots who wish to operate aircrafts in South Dakota are required to obtain the proper training and certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). All pilots in South Dakota must receive a minimum of 40 hours of flight time, carry a valid FAA medical certificate, and pass the FAA written and practical tests to become a certified pilot. Before a pilot can take flight, they must receive a minimum of 20 hours of instruction with an FAA certified instructor, 10 hours of solo flight time, 3 hours of night flying and 3 hours of cross-country flying in a plane with an engine of at least 180 horsepower, as well as a range of 10 miles and an altitude of 1,500 feet. Pilots must also complete 5 hours of instrument flight training and be familiar with the airspace requirements in South Dakota. In addition to the flight time requirements, all pilots must take the FAA written exam. This test will cover topics such as air regulations, air traffic control procedures, aircraft navigation, meteorology, and aircraft engines. All pilots must receive a score of 70% or higher to pass the exam. After completing their flight training, pilots must then take the FAA Practical Exam. This is an evaluation of the pilot’s knowledge and skills, and will involve the pilot flying an aircraft with an FAA-authorized examiner. Upon successful completion of the exam, the pilot will be issued an FAA certificate and may then legally operate aircrafts in South Dakota.
