What is the process for aircraft registration?
In Washington, the process for aircraft registration is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and governed by the Aircraft Registration Act of 1935. The first step in the process is to determine whether the aircraft is going to be registered nationally or locally. If the aircraft is going to be registered nationally, the owner of the aircraft must submit an Application for Aircraft Registration (FAA Form 8050-1). This form must include all the necessary information, including the owner’s name and address, make and model of the aircraft, and the aircraft’s serial number. Once the FAA receives the application with the correct information, the aircraft will be assigned a new N-Number, or registration number. It is important to note that this process can take a few weeks. The next step in the registration process is to obtain a proof of ownership certificate, also known as a “bill of sale," from the previous owner. This document must be signed by both the buyer and seller of the aircraft, and notarized. The owner must then submit the bill of sale to the FAA. Finally, the owner must place the new N-Number prominently on the aircraft, in accordance with FAA regulations. This typically means that the registration number must be painted on the side of the aircraft in a visible color. Once this is done, the aircraft is officially registered.
