What are the legal requirements for aircraft ownership transfer?
In Louisiana, the legal requirements for aircraft ownership transfer are important to understand. For the assignment of an aircraft from one owner to another, the buyer and seller must both provide proof of identity. These documents can include a state-issued driver’s license, a passport, and/or a state-issued identification card. The sale of the aircraft must be documented in writing, and the seller must provide a signed bill of sale, as well as a signed statement of aircraft registration. If applicable, the seller must also provide a valid pilot certificate and maintenance records. After the paperwork is exchanged, the seller must complete a document verifying and confirming the sale of the aircraft. Then, the buyer must submit the original documents to the Aircraft Registration office of the Louisiana Department of Transportation to be officially registered. In order to be registered, the aircraft must have a valid registration number, the date of purchase, and the name and address of the buyer. Finally, the buyer must register the aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and obtain a valid aircraft registration number (N-number). The FAA will require personal information from the new owner of the aircraft, such as name and address, as well as a current copy of the aircraft registration. Once all these steps are completed, the aircraft ownership transfer is approved, and the aircraft is legally owned by the new buyer.
