What international laws apply to aviation security?
International laws set forth a framework for aviation security measures. These laws provide guidelines for states to take to ensure that all flights are safe and secure. The most important governing bodies for aviation security are the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Both organizations work in close cooperation to guarantee the highest levels of safety and security for international air travel. The ICAO sets out policies and procedures for states on topics, such as airports security, aircraft safety, and air traffic control procedures. It also monitors the effectiveness of existing laws and advises countries on how to improve them. The IATA is a trade association with more than 265 member airlines. It meets regularly to discuss and agree on minimum standards for aviation security. All member airlines must adhere to those standards, which include preflight security checks, baggage screening, and screening passengers and crew. The European Union also has its own aviation law, called the EU Regulation on Aviation Security. This law sets out minimum requirements for security officers, passenger and crew screening, technical measures for screening of baggage and cargo, and a number of other security-related topics. The bottom line is that all states should adhere to the international standards for aviation security set forth by the ICAO and IATA, as well as the EU aviation law. That way, everyone can be sure that flying is safe and secure, regardless of where their flights originate or where they are heading.
