What are the legal requirements for aviation fuel?
In Washington, the legal requirements for aviation fuel are governed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). All aviation fuel must meet the standards set forth in 14 CFR Part 43, titled “Fuels for Aircraft Engines.” The rules dictate the specific type of fuel that can be approved for use in aircraft and require that it meets the requirements of ASTM Specification D1655 or a subsequent additive specification. The FAA also requires that all aviation fuel meets certain uniform specifications and is tested and approved by a designated testing laboratory. Aviation fuel must also meet certain fire safety standards. Aviation fuel is required to have a minimum flash point of either 38° Celsius or 75° Fahrenheit, depending on the fuel type, as well as a minimum auto-ignition temperature. Additionally, the FAA regulates where and how aviation fuel is stored, requiring that it be kept in a storage tank that meets the requirements of 14 CFR Part 91, Subpart H. The FAA also has specific rules related to fuel contamination prevention. For example, all aviation fuel must be filtered and screened at least two times before it is used. Furthermore, all aircraft operators must inspect and test their fuel for contaminants and contamination levels at least once a year. Lastly, the FAA requires aircraft operators to remove any debris and water that may have found its way into the fuel tanks prior to any flight.
