What is the purpose of the Convention on Unlawful Interference with Civil Aviation?

The Convention on Unlawful Interference with Civil Aviation is an international treaty that establishes the legal obligations of countries to act against acts of unlawful interference with civil aviation. This treaty is signed by all members of the United Nations and governs the security of both international and domestic civil aviation. The purpose of this convention is to protect civil aircraft from unlawful interference. This includes preventing and responding to acts of violence or sabotage against aircraft in flight and those on the ground. It also seeks to prevent unauthorized access to or use of aircraft and airports. Additionally, the convention outlines obligations for states to co-operate in preventing, detecting and responding to threats against civil aviation, and sets out criminal offences for which individuals and organizations can be prosecuted for interfering with civil aviation. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has developed a number of standards, procedures and rules to ensure that all countries comply with the Convention. These include the requirement for countries to provide appropriate security measures for airports and aircraft, and the adoption of laws and regulations to criminalize unlawful interference with civil aviation and related activities. The Convention on Unlawful Interference with Civil Aviation is an important piece of international law that seeks to promote the security of air commerce, and protect passengers and crew from unlawful interference and terrorist acts.
