How are aircraft accident records maintained?

In Kansas, aircraft accident records are maintained in accordance with U.S. National Transportation Safety Board regulations. Reports of each accident are submitted to the Kansas Division of Aviation’s Aviation Safety Investigations Bureau (KASIB) by aircraft, airport, or other aviation operators. After the initial report is made, a full and detailed report of the incident is released publicly by KASIB. KASIB’s reports include information on aircrafts type or model, aircraft registration, date and time of the accident, location, a narrative of the circumstances of the accident, findings, and probable cause(s). The reports list and describe any injuries or fatalities, amount of damage, and any other information that can be used to further investigate the accident. This information is kept in a permanent record. The Division of Aviation also maintains records of aircraft and operator inspections and maintenance that are conducted in the state. A Part 91 aircraft operator in Kansas must keep records of aircraft performance and alterations, and of the condition and performance of personnel. The operator may be asked to submit any or all of these records at any time. In addition to the Division of Aviation’s regulations, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also requires certain records to be kept in the aircraft’s log book that are up to date. This includes information about the aircraft’s condition, maintenance, required inspections, and certifications, as well as any tests, repairs, and alterations.
