Are there rules for ending alimony payments?

In Oklahoma, there are several rules for ending alimony payments. Generally speaking, the obligation to pay alimony ends when either the former spouse receiving the payments remarries, passes away, or reaches a certain age (usually 66). Additionally, the court may decide to terminate alimony payments if there is a significant change in the financial circumstances of the paying spouse, or if the former spouse receiving the payments cohabitates with another partner. In some cases, the court may also terminate alimony payments if the former spouse receiving the payments begins to earn a significant amount of money from employment or other sources. This is because alimony is designed to provide temporary assistance to the receiving spouse, as well as to allow the paying spouse to become financially independent. The court may also modify alimony payments if the paying spouse can no longer afford to pay the amount due. In such a situation, the court may lower the payments, extend the time period for payments, or even terminate them if necessary. To end alimony payments, a paying spouse must file a motion with the court requesting termination. The court will then consider the motion, as well as evidence of changed circumstances, before deciding whether or not to terminate the payments.
