When does an alimony obligation begin?
In Nebraska, an alimony obligation begins when the court issues an order granting spousal support. The court can issue an alimony order at any time during the divorce proceedings, typically following the determination of the marital assets and debt. The order will specify the amount of alimony, the duration of the alimony obligation, and the payment and collection process. Typically, the court will order one spouse to make regular payments to the other spouse until the obligation is fulfilled. Even though alimony can be granted at any time during the divorce proceedings, it cannot be modified or terminated until the court issues the order and it is officially in effect. Furthermore, alimony payments will never begin retroactively - the obligation will begin only after the date of the court order.
