Is alimony permanent or temporary?

Alimony in Oklahoma is typically a temporary form of support. It is generally available to spouses who have experienced a significant change in circumstances due to a divorce. In other words, alimony is meant to provide temporary support to one spouse while they work to become financially independent after the divorce. In Oklahoma, alimony awards are dependent on the length of the marriage and the income disparity between the spouses. Alimony will not be awarded in cases of short-term marriages or when the income disparity is not significant. Additionally, alimony orders can be modified after the divorce if either spouse’s circumstances significantly change. In general, alimony in Oklahoma is only meant to provide temporary financial support until the recipient spouse can become financially independent. After the order for alimony is granted, the payments will terminate when either the recipient spouse remarries, if the receiving spouse is found living with a partner or cohabiting, or when the paying spouse retires or passes away. Alimony may also be terminated if the court finds that the recipient spouse fails to diligently pursue their own employment or fails to obtain skills necessary to support themselves.
