What countries have animal rights laws?

Animal rights laws aim to protect the welfare of animals by maintaining standards of humane treatment and preventing the exploitation of animals for human gain. While the scope of animal rights laws vary significantly from country to country, many countries around the world have established such laws in some form. In the United States, animal rights laws are mainly set at the state level. For example, in Minnesota, there are multiple statutes that address animal rights. These laws include protections for domestic animals, preventing animal cruelty, prohibiting the keeping of wild animals in captivity, and banning specific animal-related activities such as dog fighting. In Europe, the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals, enacted in 1987, is the primary animal rights law. It outlines minimum standards of care for pets and obligates parties to the convention to enact laws that prohibit mistreatment and abuse of animals. In addition, the European Union has passed various animal rights laws covering specific activities such as animal testing and animal slaughter. Outside of Europe and the US, countries in the Asia Pacific region have also passed laws pertaining to animal welfare and rights. Australia, Japan, and South Korea, for example, have enacted various laws covering issues such as the humane slaughter of livestock, the treatment of working animals, and the protection of endangered species. Similarly, countries in South America, such as Brazil and Argentina, have established animal rights laws that seek to protect the welfare of domestic animals and wild animals, as well as animals in captivity.
