What are the penalties for breaking animal rights laws?

In Massachusetts, the penalties for breaking animal rights laws depend on the specific violation. Generally, any person who is found guilty of violating an animal rights law may be found guilty of a misdemeanor. This can mean a fine of up to $2,500 or imprisonment for up to 2.5 years, or both. In addition, for certain violations of animal rights laws, a court can order the party found guilty to make restitution to the victimized animal. If the guilty party fails to make restitution, then the court may order the removal of the animal from the person’s possession. If a person is found to have engaged in animal cruelty, then he or she may be charged with a felony and face a prison sentence of up to 5 years, as long as the animal does not die as a result of the cruelty. In cases of aggravated animal cruelty, which involves extreme intentional or malicious cruelty, the party found guilty may face up to 7 years in prison. In the most serious cases, the court may order the convicted to pay for the cost of animal medical treatment, and the convicted person may be barred from owning or caring for animals in the future. Furthermore, the court may require the convicted party to undertake counseling or psychiatric treatment, as a condition of the sentence.
