Is it legal to sell or buy animals for entertainment purposes?

In the state of Virginia, it is not legal to sell or buy animals for entertainment purposes. The Virginia Animal Care and Control Act strictly prohibits any person from buying, selling, bartering, or transporting certain types of animals for entertainment purposes. This includes exotic animals, wild animals, and domesticated animals that are kept for show or display. In addition, it is illegal to possess, own, or use an animal as a pet if it is intended to be used or exhibited in any circus, carnival, traveling show, sideshow, rodeo, exhibition, or other similar type of entertainment. This prohibition extends to horses and other equines used for racing as well. There are a few instances where it is legal to buy and sell animals for entertainment purposes in Virginia. These include licensed wild animal exhibitors, state and county fairs, humane societies, and animal shelters. Each of these entities must be authorized by the state and adhere to the regulations outlined in the Virginia Animal Care and Control Act. Additionally, private owners may purchase and keep animals as pets so long as they abide by the animal care rules set forth by the Act. Finally, when an individual sells an animal, they must make sure it is bought by an appropriate person who is capable of providing adequate care.
