What is art forgery?
Art forgery is the act of creating a work of art in an attempt to pass it off as authentic when it is not. It’s an illegal practice that results in financial gain for the forger. In Oklahoma, art forgery is treated as a form of theft and fraud, and those found guilty of it may face jail time or fines. In terms of the artistic value of forgeries, art forgeries can never be the same as an original work. The materials and techniques used to create an original work are not just important to give the work an aesthetic value, but they are also used to prove the work as authentic. An art forger may attempt to mimic these materials and techniques, but they cannot replicate the exact same artistic quality as the original work. In their attempt to deceive, art forgers may use a variety of methods to make the forgery look and feel as close to an authentic work as possible. Some forgers may even create sophisticated websites, faux certificates of authenticity, and even false provenance records. Therefore, it is important to take the proper steps to authenticate any work of art before it is purchased. Authenticators look for telltale signs that a work of art is an original and not a forgery. The forgery of artwork has been around for centuries, and those who practice it are facing increasingly harsh legal penalties in Oklahoma. Art forgery is an illegal act that is punishable by jail time and financial penalties. In order to protect the integrity of the artistic value of a work, it is important to authenticate any work of art before it is purchased.
