What are the different types of asbestos-related diseases?
Asbestos-related diseases are conditions, illnesses, and disorders brought on by exposure to asbestos, a fibrous material commonly used in construction and industrial product manufacturing. The most serious of these diseases are mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the lungs, abdominal lining, and heart lining that can only be caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestosis is a progressive scarring of the lungs that can lead to disability or even death. Lung cancer is a general term for a type of cancer that is very difficult to treat. Less serious asbestos-related diseases include pleural plaques, pleural thickening, and pleural effusion. Pleural plaques are collections of abnormal cells found on the outer layer of the lungs that can cause shortness of breath. Pleural thickening is when the linings of the lungs become thicker, restricting the movement of air in and out of the lungs. Pleural effusion is a build-up of fluid in the lungs. In North Carolina, those diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases may be able to pursue legal action against the responsible parties. Asbestos litigation law in North Carolina grants those with an asbestos-related illness the right to file a lawsuit in order to seek compensation for their injuries.
