What are the laws about passing other vehicles?
In South Carolina, it is unlawful to pass another vehicle on the right side of the road. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Drivers may pass on the right if the vehicle in front of them is indicating a left turn, or if the road is wide enough to allow for safe passing. Additionally, drivers may not pass another vehicle in an intersection, unless it is a two-lane road. Furthermore, while passing another vehicle, drivers must always maintain a safe speed and may not exceed the posted speed limit. It is also important to carefully watch for any pedestrians or bicyclists that may be in the area. It is also illegal to pass on a hill crest or curve, as the lack of visibility makes it difficult to gauge whether or not approaching traffic is coming. Drivers should also avoid passing in designated no-passing zones, which are typically found on two-lane roads with broken yellow lines. When passing, drivers must always use their signals to indicate their intention to go around the vehicle ahead of them and must take care to pass in a safe and responsible manner. Once a driver has safely passed the vehicle in front, they must get back into their lane as soon as possible. Finally, drivers should avoid any unnecessary lane changing and always use their turn signals when changing lanes.
