What is the law about right-of-way at intersections?

In South Carolina, state law clearly outlines the rules of right-of-way at intersections. Generally, vehicles at an intersection must yield right-of-way to vehicles in other lanes. If two vehicles approach an intersection from opposite directions, the driver on the left must yield to the vehicle on the right. However, the driver on the right must also come to a complete stop before entering the intersection. Additionally, when two vehicles approach an intersection from intersecting roads, the vehicle traveling straight must have the right-of-way. The vehicle turning left should slow down and yield to the vehicle going straight if necessary. If both vehicles are turning left, the vehicle on the left must yield to the vehicle on the right. When making a left turn at an intersection, drivers must yield to oncoming vehicles and proceed only when it is safe. If a traffic signal governs an intersection, drivers must obey the signals. When turning left at a flashing red light, drivers must stop, look both ways for other vehicles, and then proceed when safe. It is very important for drivers to understand and obey the right-of-way rules at intersections. Not following the law can result in an accident and potential citations. Everyone must be aware of their surroundings and stay alert at all times when driving.
