What are the laws about parking in a designated handicap parking space?

In South Carolina, it is illegal to park in a designated handicap parking space without displaying the appropriate handicap placard or license plate. Doing so can result in a $100 to $500 fine plus court fees. To be eligible to use a designated handicap parking space, drivers must meet one of the following criteria: possession of a valid driver’s license and a valid handicap placard or plate; possession of a valid disability parking permit (gold or silver); or a visible disability such as the lack of the use of a leg or arm.
