What are the laws about distracted driving?
Distracted driving is illegal in Washington. The law prohibits any form of distraction while driving, including, but not limited to, texting, talking on the phone, and using a GPS, mobile device, laptop, tablet, electronic game, or other electronic device. Washington drivers can only use hands-free devices if the device meets specific requirements. The device must be affixed to the vehicle, not handheld, and must allow for voice recognition or one-button activation. Drivers may not program a GPS or take notes while driving. Drivers under 18 may not talk on a cell phone at any time while driving, and anyone under 20 may not use any type of electronic device. Motorists found talking on a cellular device or texting while driving will face fines, license suspension, and potential jail time. If the distraction leads to an accident and injury or death, the driver is liable for damages that result. Washington also prohibits drivers from engaging in any activity that will distract them from operating the vehicle properly. This includes, but is not limited to, eating and drinking, reading, or even animal riding. Drivers who disobey this rule face a maximum fine of $99 and 2 demerit points on their license. Distracted driving is a serious offense and can result in serious consequences. Washington law enforcement is cracking down on distracted driving, so it is important to obey the law and stay focused while driving to protect yourself and others.
