What are the laws about parking in a designated handicap parking space?

In Washington, it is illegal to park a vehicle in a designated handicap parking space without a valid handicap parking permit or license plate. Any vehicle parked in a designated handicap space must have a valid handicap parking permit visibly displayed at all times. It is also illegal to misuse or abuse a handicap parking permit or license plate, or to park a vehicle in a handicap space that is not legally entitled to the permit or license plate. Violations of these laws can result in fines and other penalties. In addition to being ticketed, individuals may also be responsible for reimbursing the state for any money lost due to their misuse of the handicap parking space. If the violation occurs in a business parking lot, the vehicle may be towed at the owner’s expense. It is important to note that handicap parking spaces are designed to provide additional mobility for individuals with disabilities, and are intended for their exclusive use. Whenever possible, individuals who do not possess a valid handicap parking permit or license plate should take extra care to avoid using a designated handicap space and should instead use an alternative parking area. By doing so, we can help ensure that individuals with disabilities have the mobility and access they need to safely and conveniently access public services.
