What is the legal age to get a driver's license?
In Washington, the legal age for a person to obtain a driver’s license is 15 years and 6 months old. This age was set in law by the state legislature. It is important to note that although an individual may be 15 ½ years of age and be able to take the written and driving tests, they cannot actually receive their license until they reach the minimum age of 16. In addition to the minimum age of 15 ½, there are other requirements that must be met before a person can obtain a driver’s license. First, a person must obtain a permit which requires passing the written test and having a parent or guardian sign the paperwork. Once the permit is obtained, the individual must provide proof of identity, proof of Washington state residence, and proof of their Social Security number. Lastly, the person must pass both the written test and the road test before they can receive their license. In Washington, the most important requirement for obtaining a driver’s license is meeting the legal age requirement. The state legislature has set the age at 15 ½ and a person must be at least this age in order to begin the process of obtaining a license. Once this age is met, the other necessary requirements must be met such as obtaining a permit, providing documentation, and passing the written and road tests before a license will be granted.
