What is the legal age to get a driver's license?

In California, the legal age to obtain a driver’s license is seventeen years old. However, the driver must still be enrolled in a driver education class and have at least six hours of behind-the-wheel training. In addition, the driver must have a learner’s permit for at least six months before they can obtain a driver’s license. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all applicants for a driver’s license to pass a written test, a vision test and a driving test. After passing the tests, the driver must pay a fee and be issued a driver’s license. The state of California also has a graduated driver licensing program, which helps new drivers gain valuable experience behind the wheel before they are allowed to drive on their own. Under the program, teens between the ages of 16 and 17 must first obtain an instruction permit, which allows them to drive under the supervision of an adult. After a certain amount of supervised driving, they can obtain a provisional license which allows them to drive unaccompanied in certain circumstances. Once they turn eighteen, they can then apply for a full driver’s license. To help ensure the safety of new drivers, California has a Zero Tolerance Law, which states that drivers under the age of 21 cannot have any alcohol in their system while driving. If a driver is caught with any amount of alcohol in their system, they face serious penalties, such as having their license suspended for a year. In summary, the legal age for obtaining a driver’s license in California is seventeen, but the driver must have a learner’s permit and pass all the required tests before they can get a driver’s license. Additionally, the state has a graduated driver licensing program and a Zero Tolerance Law, which help ensure the safety of young drivers.
