What are the laws about lane changing?
In New Hampshire, lane changing laws help to keep traffic moving safely and orderly. When changing lanes, drivers must use their turn signals to make other drivers aware of their intentions. Drivers must also make sure it is safe to change lanes before doing so. It is illegal to weave in and out of traffic while changing lanes. Drivers are only allowed to change lanes when the lane they are entering is clear of traffic and there is enough space to move into. Drivers should not move into a lane a significant distance away without first moving into an intermediate lane and allowing other drivers to move between them. Drivers should also not attempt to pass on the right, as it is illegal and dangerous. If changing lanes on highways or interstates, drivers must also keep in mind the speed limit of the left lane, as law enforcement can ticket drivers who do not remain in the correct lane for the lawful speed. Finally, drivers should always be aware of road conditions, including weather, and adjust their speed if necessary. If a driver needs to change lanes because of an obstacle in the road, it is important to use the blinker to alert other drivers. It is also important to keep a safe following distance to give other drivers time to adjust when a driver needs to change lanes.
