What are the laws about driving while using a cell phone?
In Pennsylvania, it is illegal to use a hand-held electronic device while driving. This includes talking on a cell phone, texting, using a GPS device, and using any other hand-held device. Additionally, all drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using any type of electronic device, including hands-free devices, while driving. Drivers who are stopped and found to be in violation of the cell phone law face a variety of penalties. Primary offenses are subject to a fine of $50 for the first offense and $100 for subsequent offenses. Additionally, 3 points will be added to the driver’s license for each violation. In some cases, a driver can be charged with a misdemeanor of the third degree for using a cell phone while driving. This is punishable by a fine of up to $2,500 and/or 90 days in jail. Drivers who are considered distracted because of their use of a cell phone or other electronic device can also face charges of careless or reckless driving. This is a more serious offense and can result in a license suspension of up to 90 days and a fine of up to $2,500. If someone is injured or killed as a result of the driver’s distraction, the driver may face further criminal charges. It is very important for Pennsylvania drivers to be aware of these laws and take the necessary precautions to ensure that they are following them. In addition to following the law, drivers should also use common sense and be aware of their surroundings while driving.
