What is the law about right-of-way at intersections?

In Washington, drivers must follow the law regarding right-of-way at intersections. This means that drivers must yield to other drivers who have the right-of-way, otherwise known as the “first in time, first in right” rule. When two cars approach an intersection at the same time, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right. If neither driver has the right-of-way, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right. Other situations where drivers must yield the right-of-way include when pedestrians are in a crosswalk, when a driver is turning left, when traffic signals dictate who has the right-of-way, and when approaching an intersection where the other driver has a green light or a stop sign. In these cases, the driver who does not have the right-of-way must yield to the other driver. If two vehicles approach an intersection from different directions and the roads do not intersect, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right. If two vehicles approach an intersection from the same direction and one is ahead of the other, the driver in the lead has the right-of-way and the driver following must yield by slowing down or stopping. Failing to yield the right-of-way can result in a traffic violation or an accident. That is why it is important to understand the law and yield to others who have the right-of-way at intersections.
