What are the laws about vehicle modifications?
In Washington, the laws regarding vehicle modifications are outlined by the Washington State Department of Licensing. In general, any modifications made to a vehicle must maintain the same level of safety as the vehicle had when it was manufactured. All aftermarket exhaust systems must also meet noise level restrictions, and they must also include a spark arresting device. When it comes to lights, aftermarket headlamps and tail lamps must meet the same standards as factory-installed lights. In addition, only one blue light is allowed in the front of the vehicle, and any other colored lights must be covered. For window tint, the darkness or glare reduction on the front windshield and front side windows is limited to 24%. On the back windows and back windshield, there is no restriction on the darkness or glare reduction. For safety, the law requires seatbelts for all passengers, as well as an anchor point in the back seat for child safety seats. All vehicles must also have an operable horn, a rearview mirror, and two wipers. The windshield must also be free of any obstructions. Finally, non-street legal modifications are not allowed. This includes items like nitrous tanks, roll cages, and certain types of racing hardware. Only certified mechanics are able to make these modifications. Any modifications that do not meet the regulations outlined by the Department of Licensing can result in heavy fines and even license revocation.
