What are the laws about towing a trailer?
In Texas, it is important to know the laws regarding towing a trailer. Depending on the weight of the trailer and the items being towed, different rules may apply. All drivers who wish to tow a trailer must obtain a special license or permit issued by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV). The license or permit allows drivers to tow trailers weighing over 4,600 kilograms (10,000 pounds). If the trailer and items being towed together weigh more than 4,000 kilograms (8,800 pounds), the driver must also obtain a special non-commercial trailer permit. To ensure your trailer is secure and stable when towing it, Texas law requires that every trailer must be attached to the towing vehicle with safety chains, cables, or equivalent devices. Additionally, trailers that are 4,600 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or more must also be equipped with an emergency brake system. Finally, Texas law requires that any trailer being towed in the state must have valid trailer registration. This registration must be displayed on the back of the trailer. If you are found to be towing a trailer without compliance with these laws, you may be subject to a fine or other penalty.
